Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP)
SMP Myth vs Fact
What is SMP? Is Scalp Micropigmentation a Tattoo?
What is SMP? SMP is not a tattoo.
SMP is the use of a hair-thickening medical tattooing procedure whereby pigment is implanted to mimic the appearance of natural hair follicle growth. SMP diminishes the contrast between the hair and the scalp, leaving you with the appearance of a thicker head of hair.
Even though SMP and tattoos both use pigment, the techniques are totally different; the kind of pigments used, the depth the colour is implanted at, and the finished effect are very different.
The Biggest Myth
- Myth: “SMP is just a tattoo on the scalp.”
- Fact: SMP is a highly specialised treatment that has been created to be applied exactly to the scalp.
How SMP works: Every follicle is replicated to match thousands of hair follicles in the natural head, with precise positioning, colour, and depth to resemble the thousands of natural hair follicles.
- Not meant to create a piece of art.
- We try to copy the hair.
Hair Science Simplified
How Does SMP Create the Illusion of Hair?
It’s not the reduction in hair that is the first thing we notice; it’s the “clarity of scalp” that results from missing hair that is our first observation. When you have dark hair and a light scalp, it’s more obvious.
How it works: SMP uses the illusion of creating a series of tiny dots of colour dispersed between your natural hair or on a clean scalp. This mimics the appearance of increased depth and density by blending away the contrast between your hair and your scalp.
SMP does not create new hair. It creates the visual illusion of more hair.
Who Can Benefit from SMP?
Scalp micropigmentation can be an excellent option for:
- Men with thinning hair.
- Women with diffuse hair loss.
- Patients with advanced baldness.
- Hair transplant patients seeking additional visual density.
- FUT scar camouflage.
- FUE donor area camouflage.
- Alopecia in selected patients.
Each patient must be evaluated individually before any treatment.
Is SMP a substitute for hair transplant?
Maybe not.
There are some patients who are best suited for SMP alone. Or, there are some individuals for whom hair transplants are the preferred choice.
Most patients are going to get the most benefit when treated with Hair Transplant combined with SMP to maintain density. The specific treatment will be determined by hair loss pattern, donor hair quality and amount, as well as patient expectations.
Is SMP permanent?
SMP is designed to be long-lasting.
However, like many cosmetic procedures, pigments gradually soften over time. Some patients choose a touch-up after several years to maintain the original appearance.
CosmoLux Clinical Insight
One of the biggest misconceptions is that SMP simply adds pigment to the scalp.
In reality, successful SMP depends on:
- Selection of patients.
- Inspection of the scalp.
- Outlining your natural hairline.
- Selecting the colour.
- Impression size is adequate.
- Precise control of depth.
- Jugement artistique.
Technology has its place.
Requires practice.
Cosmolux Unique treatments – no two scalps are alike.
Remember This
- SMP is not a conventional tattoo.
- SMP creates the illusion of hair density.
- It does not stimulate new hair growth.
- It can be performed with shaved or longer hair in suitable patients.
- It can be used alone or combined with hair transplants.
- Natural results depend on planning, precision, and experience.
